Harry Potter Publication Props - Quibbler and The Daily Prophet Post #6

Good Monday Morning Readers,

Today I am going to share with you the props I made for my son's Harry Potter Party. I made 4 of each of the two popular publications mentioned in the book, The Quibbler and The Daily Prophet. Both were very easy to make and they add another detail to the party just having them lay around. My daughter made The Daily Prophets and she is seven years old.

Here are the Quibblers. I printed out covers and backs on cardstock and glued them to old magazines with Helmar Acid Free Glue! This gave them dimension and a real feel of an actual publication. If you opened them though you would find old expired coupons mostly.

The Daily Prophets were very easy. I printed the top 1/2 of a image of the front page of multiple titles from all different movies. Then wrapped them around an old newspaper and tied them with twine.

Here they are dispersed throughout the party:

In the Great Hall with the Golden Snitch Cake... more to come in a future post about that.

Here is a Daily Prophet it the Gringotts display:

Need some light reading when your in the loo?  We provided two types to suit the political taste of all our guests.

One last thing... the photo header is an image from the Gryffindor Common Room. where one of each of these were displayed on the center ottoman.

Honeydukes Candy Display - Harry Potter Party Post #5

Hello fellow crafters, DIYers and Harry Potter enthusiasts!

Honeydukes is one of the candy stores in the Harry Potter series. We decided to have a candy store instead of a pinata and all the chaos that comes with it. HOWEVER, with almost 40 kids waiting to "buy" their treats the chaos showed up anyway... LOL! I am still posting these photos, I know it's been a couple of weeks since the party... okay three weeks. I have been so busy! I promise I won't leave anything out and after this I will have wedding posts to compete so stay tuned! At the end of this post there is a list of other Harry Potter Posts of rooms and projects created for this party.

The Honeydukes sign letters were cut out of green cardstock on the cricut, glued on with Helmar Acid Free Glue and then highlighted with a pearl puff paint. The background was pink Cardstock with pink distressing. The green Moldings for the windows were pieces of Green cardstock that the letters were cut out of for the sign. I glued them in longer lengths and used Scotch removable double sided tape to adhere it to the cabinet.

 The Menu:

Acid Pops (link for recipe below)
Bertie & Botts Every Flavored Beans (Jelly Belly)
Ice Mice (gummy mice)
Creamy Caramel Charms (caramel candy)
Dragon Fluff Eggs (large marshmallow Easter egg candys)
Flaming Breath Disks (Cinnamon Disks)
Bite Sized Basilisks (gummy worms)
Better Butter Nut Bars (A peanut hard candy)
Gringotts Coins (chocolate coins)
Marshmallow Poles
Smarties (makes you magically brilliant ya know)
Lemon Pucks (a lemon disk that was sugar free for some kids)
Rooted Beer Barrels (root beer barrels)
Licorice Wands (black licorice would be best... but the kids like red better)
Buttered Beer Disks (Butterscotch disks)
Chocolate Frogs (made myself with a mold and printed the boxes)
Unicorn Horns (twisted lolly pops from oriental trading co.)
Pixie Sticks
Jaw Buster Bombs (jaw breakers)
Mad Eye Moody Pops (Halloween candy found this time of year at Oriental Trading Co.)
No Melt Ice cream (bubbles shaped like ice cream)
Bitter Blood Balls (sour cherry balls)
Wormtail Teeth (Peter Pettigrew's name as a rat, these teeth were
gummy rabbit teeth from Oriental Trading Co.)
Swirly Sticks (Old Fashioned twisted candy sticks)

We had so much candy, 24 different types, we could not display it all in the cabinet so we added an extra display.

Mad Eye Moody Pops were added to the menu to represent this character at our party. These were found at Oriental Trading Company.

Acid Pops were egg shaped Tootsie Pops on clearance from Easter. We dipped them in honey and rolled them in Pop Rocks! This was a great way for my little ones to help with the projects. The idea was found at the Pastry Affair blog.

Ice Mice were also available (direct from the books) these beauties I randomly found at the $1 store in the end of April! Needless to say they added a great discussion piece to the display but we had a ton of them left over. LOL!

No Melt Ice Cream posed the biggest challenge (mentioned in the movies) then at the $1 store I stumbled across summer ice cream bubble containers... I knew then!!! This was perfect for it.

Making chocolate frogs I found the mold on Amazon.

I hand cut 50 Bertie & Botts every flavor beans boxes with an exacto knife . I used Helmar  Acid Free glue to adhere these shut. Quick and easy... well at least the gluing part was. I used Helmar 450 Quick Dry to adhere the flags together and glue the tops of the boxes closed.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and idea post for a Harry Potter Hogwarts Party. I hope you received some inspiration. Have a wonderful day.

Harry Potter Birthday Decor Project Video with Helmar - Post #4

Hello Readers!
I know it has been a while since my last post. I have been out of town... right after the Harry Potter Party I had to leave on a two week trip to Colorado for my baby sister's wedding... lots of projects to share about that too. It was my son's 10th birthday party and I know I am a sucker for going all out on the big day... he hit double digits after all.

But for now as I play catch up from this crazy busy month here is a video I made of all the Helmar Projects for the Harry Potter party. More post to come about the individual project and the rooms and other projects not in this video.

Hope you enjoy this video and like I said more detailed posts to come!

Harry Potter Potions and Ingredients Decorations for a Party - Post #3

Good Monday Morning everyone!

Today I am going to take a moment to go over some detailed props I made for my son's Harry Potter Birthday party. The Potions Class was one of my detailed labors of love.

This is my Herb Shelf in my Potions Cabinet for our Potions class. There are a lot of items pulled right out of the yard and placed in jars, leaves, un-ripened fruit (it's early spring here), grass, flowers, etc. One jar is labeled "Floobber Worm Parts" and I took hot glue and squeezed it into a large jar of cold water once a "worm" was created I took it out and did it over and over again. I have tissue paper cut into scales of dragons. Be creative! The other ingredients I purchased at a garage sale ... here is how the bargaining went.

"Excuse me, I have an odd questions... Can I purchase this Dusty Potpourri from inside this beautiful bowl you want $3 for?" - I said to the lady...
"Um.... (baffled look on her face) Sure how about $1" - the seller replied.
I said to her "How about $0.50?"

And the deal was made! This potpourri was full of seed pods and wood chips in many shapes, sizes and species. I also searched high and low for different bottles and jars and at thrift stores and such... out here they were still so expensive. I searched for them here at garage sales and that is where I found the best deals. I was lucky some realtors in our community hosted a huge garage sale day with a map and all... I hit upwards of 30 yard sales this past weekend and found numerous deals and still walked away from a few.
Here is my cabinet prior to the swap meet bizarre today our church put on where I found a box of glass baby bottles. They were perfect! We drug this lawyer cabinet from the Hubby's office.
See that very tall apothecary jar on the top... that was a garage sale find for $1! And it even came with a "ambiance" layer of dust and grease for free, how did they know I would appreciate that for my party? LOL! (and yes, I didn't clean it...yet... I am waiting till after the party)

The above photo is of some of my sea life potions and ingredients. The baby shark in the jar in the back is my son's souvenir from Hawaii from my Hubby a few years ago. The sea horses in the mason jar are from the $1 Store in a large pack of sea live toys. The Coral (all of them) I got for $1 at a yard sale... SCORE! That stuff is expensive (and I will add it to my bathroom after this anyway.) Off to look at some labels and more details...
I adhered...all of these with... um... dare I say it? Hot glue! (not Helmar) I know FOR SHAME!!!
But really, a few of these are borrowed... I would like to donate or resell some of the others after the party...
and Helmar... well their glue is just too good to waste a small bottle on when I am just going to try to tear off the labels after the party anyway... If I used Helmar, I would not be able to remove them.
Hot Glue on glass is easy to remove once it is cooled a bit. It pops right off!
I guess that is the sign of a good Helmar Glue... to know what glue is right for the job. LOL!

The last potion bottle I want to share with you is this beauty... I love it so much because it was such a great deal and all I had to do was put a label on it... it was filled this way and the symbol on the front was perfect! This was a total of $0.25 at a garage sale... a whole 1/2 off their asking price. Hehe!

I fallowed this ladies tutorial HERE on how to cover the tops of the jars with coffee filters... only I don't drink coffee and the filters are in my craft room for use with glitter. I stained mine with a bit of water, soy sauce and a squirt of an oil based dark walnut scratch repair liquid. (I had it on hand) I love how the oils and water don't mix... when you go to soak anything in there the oils at the top swirl around and take the the paper in different patters.

I found a ton of free printable all over the internet so I would have to design up my own.
Here are some on Flicker.
Free printables HERE.
More HERE,
I also liked these ones HERE.
Here is my favorite Polly Juice Potion one and a few more on the same sheet.
I got several like my Gillyweed from these... HERE.

Harry Potter Party, Ollivanders Wand Craft Tutorial - Harry Potter Post #2

Good morning everyone,

Our home is in full swing for our Harry. Potter Party! My Piano room is now a bank, candy store and wand shop, it's a mini Diagon Alley! Speaking of Ollivanders Wands... that is exactly what I want to share with you today.

The Birthday Boy's Wand (details Painted designed by him but I did the hot glue, Safety First!)
The Alder Wand (in gold)
My Daughters Wand - (she painted it like the kids will paint their own at the party)

I think any one of these wands would be perfect to conjure up a Patronus or a Stupefy spell.

I researched several wands and how to create some great looking ones on Pinterest. I settled on two styles to choose from. One was so inexpensive. It took rolling a piece of paper really tight and filling it with hot glue, yup just a piece of printer paper. Though it was cheep, the second option is what I went with I found HERE. It was cheep too and only cost a few cents more per wand. I went with the option I will explain below because it saved me so much time not to have to make each wand base completely from scratch. I also felt these would be more sturdier then the previous base I explained. The only thing I didn't like is that I could shape the ones previously mentioned before into how thin or thick I wanted. So here goes the tutorial.

Step 1 - Choose your dowel rods - I found this pack of 8 pre-cut at walmart for $0.97 a pack! Excellent... no cutting even!  If I cut them myself I could have gotten 9 for around the same price... but I am all about time. Not only am I getting ready for the biggest birthday party I have ever thrown but my sister's wedding is also two weeks after the party. You better believe I have bunches of projects to do for it too.

Step 2 - Using a hot glue gun (I prefer hi-temp for maximum sticking power on wood... but you must be careful! Use low-temp if you feel more comfortable) create designs for a handle and other parts of the wand. We created 32 (and 24 more later) and not a single one is alike!

Step 3 - Paint with normal acrylic craft paint - (we just pre-painted the base coats for the party. The kids will choose a wand and detail paint it and add gems if they wish.)

We have about 6-8  base colors to paint with. This gives the kids some choices.

I really love the antique golds but I am happiest with these... All the wands painted black have snake designs from the glue. Possible "Slytherin" wands I hope, but ultimately the kids choose, or does the wand choose them?

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Leave me a comment below if you liked this post or if it inspired you to make some of your own. I would love to here from you. Thanks!

Please leave a comment below if you enjoyed this project! Thank your for reading my ramblings.
