Minecraft 3D Box Birthday Party Invitations - Custom Handmade Cards

Well my wonderful readers, it's that time of year again, my son's:

Birthday Party Time!!!

The theme this year is: MINECRAFT

In a new state we were able to scale down the amount of invitations to only 20 this year! That is huge for this Mama, who is used to inviting upwards of 40 kids! Can you imagine? I think we even had our Harry Potter party where we allowed siblings to attend as well with almost 50 kids in attendance. YIKES!

After a very chilled out BFF only party last year my son is ready to host a bash again this year. So he choose his theme of Minecraft. If you have a child in you life who likes video games I am sure you know what this is. It reverts back to the old 16-bit graphics and is wildly popular with the gaming crowd. I don't mind him playing this game because of many reasons but my favorite thing about it is that it uses creativity. My son will sit here and build a home from the bottom up or a roller coaster or something crazy. Yup, the creativity in this game is what sold me on it.

Enough about that lets get on with the 3D Invitations! Let me know what you think in the comments below.

As seen in the image above we used clear 6.5" square envelopes to hand out these cards. They could be mailed also they fold up so thin! How cool is that? Both the back and front of the card is the TNT graphic.

How does it work? Check out this 2 min video where my son, the birthday boy shows you how it works, push play and watch it in action:

Since these are double sided you can always opt to "unfold" one side relieving the inside of the box a bit more while the card is inside the envelope. But we didn't do this... thought it would be more fun to have the 3D surprise in the box when they opened it.

Option 2 on flattening the card (click to enlarge)
Once you open the card it unfolds into a box and the side flaps come down revealing the party info and characters like these here: Steve, Enderdragon, Enderman, Slime and a Zombie Pigman.

My son helped me fussy cut out all the characters, we averaged about 100 total. Here are some close ups of the characters inside the box card. The cool thing about this is each card was different. No card had the exact same characters, which left the kids chatting about it after they were handed out. Who got what inside their invitations!

Close up #1: Enderdragon, Villager, Creeper, Blaze and Steve

Close up #2: Enderdragon, Steve, Pig, Cow, Creeper and Ghast

I hope you found this an interesting post. We had tons of fun making these and handing them out. There will be more post to come about the party decor, games and food.

Owlery Cupcakes for a Harry Potter Party - post #10

Good morning everyone!

Welcome to yet another one of my Harry Potter Party posts, #10 I believe. For a complete list of current posts see the bottom of this one for more links. Today I am going to be showing you all these adorable cupcakes from our Owlery tower in honor of Hedwig.

This tree like cupcake holder was found at a yard sale for a couple of dollars. It was a votive candle holder. I took out all the glasses and added some brown floral wire under each of the holder spots. This allowed the cupcakes not to slip through.
We used the fallowing to make these:
  • Cocolate and White cake mixes for the cupcakes
  • WHITE - cupcake liners (we wanted the colors of the cake to show through)
  • Butter Cream iceing
  • Oreos - many sizes and flavors
  • M&M - one bag (not snack size)
My mother was so kind to put these together for me while I worked on the Golden Snitch Cake. Here she is putting on the M&M eye balls. For a some up close photos of these adorable cupcakes please see Pure Delights Baking Co. Owl Cupcakes Post.

Here is my son and then daughter picking out his and her cupcakes. So cute!

I think this was the first moment of silence during this party. Hehe! They were enjoyed by all 37 kids! (I know I am nuts... but 37 is better then 42 that RSVP'd)

I hope you enjoyed this post, please leave a comment below and fallow this blog to ensure you see the rest of the updates and new party posts. Thank you for your time today.

Harry Potter Party - The Three Broomsticks - Snacks and Spirits post #9

HelloHarry Potter fans and my faithful readers,

I am still working on all these Harry Potter Party photos and WOW! So many details I have to share. So here we are at our "Three broomsticks Inn" our one stop shop for snacks and spirits. I have to admit I ran out of time for all those baked party goodies you see on other Harry Potter posts. So just some very cool and yummy drinks and store bought snacks here.

The sign up above was made with three $1 store decorative broomsticks. How I found these in the middle of May when they are usually a fall decor item is beyond me. LOL! The rest is a paper wrapped piece of cardboard, a candle lantern and some cricut letters cut with the "Life's a beach" cricut cartridge. All stuck together with Helmar Acid Free Glue.

I found this amazing Butterbeer recipe through Pinterest. I contacted Colleen over at Just Sweet and Simple Blog and asked her if I could use some of her party images/projects in mine, she was there to answer any questions I had and was very helpful and allowed me to use some of her ideas and files. Thanks Colleen!. I have to admit she was a great inspiration to me. Her Blog post called "Harry Potter Party" is where I got this recipe for the Butterbeer.

The Polly Juice Potion Punch though was re-created from one of our favorite party punch recipes. Last year it was called Yoda Soda for our Lego Star Wars Party.

Recipie: (so complicated it is very difficult to replicate - hehe)
1 - 1/2 gallon of lime sherbert
2 - 2 liters of Lemon Lime Soda

Oh and this year we added dry ice... LOL! That's it! Kids from school talk about this forever! We had them ask my son a few times if I was going to make the Yoda Soda again for the Harry Potter party. Man that was a fun party too.. and those light saber invitations... WHEW! I am getting sidetracked.

I have been hunting and gathering for a couple of months now and thanks to some locals I found all these mugs and glasses for our party for really cheap. These are the Butterbeer mugs and Polly Juice pilsners in the back..

We Made Harry Potter House straws. They are the colors and flags of the houses in the stories. With the paper flags the kids could write their names on them to know who's glass each one was. They were put together with cardstock and Helmar 450 Quick Dry Glue.

We had a ton of candy, cake and cupcakes so we didn't have to many other snacks but per my son's request, cheese balls were on the menu as "golden snitch puffs".

Next I will post about the Golden Snitch Cake and the Owlery Cupcakes!

Harry Potter Birthday Decor Project Video with Helmar - Post #4

Hello Readers!
I know it has been a while since my last post. I have been out of town... right after the Harry Potter Party I had to leave on a two week trip to Colorado for my baby sister's wedding... lots of projects to share about that too. It was my son's 10th birthday party and I know I am a sucker for going all out on the big day... he hit double digits after all.

But for now as I play catch up from this crazy busy month here is a video I made of all the Helmar Projects for the Harry Potter party. More post to come about the individual project and the rooms and other projects not in this video.

Hope you enjoy this video and like I said more detailed posts to come!

Harry Potter Invitations delivered Owl Post - Harry Potter Party Post #1

Hello everyone,

I am very excited today to begin to share with you my son's tenth birthday party projects.  He has just completed all the Harry Potter books and decided he wanted a Hagwarts party. So... we started with the invites. I got this balloon owl post idea from Pinterest ... the original blog post is HERE.

Each invite was sealed with a "H" stamp and red wax. The Hogwarts logo printed on the back and addressed to them on the front "in the cupboard under the stairs" The owl post stamp image came from this blog post HERE.

Each envelope contains one ticket to the Hogwarts Express (customized to our home town and party location, in Photoshop) and an acceptance letter from Hogwarts signed by Professor M. McGonagall (I later found her actual signature image on this page HERE). This letter has a secret message hidden in it in Parseltongue (that is the font style... find free Harry Potter fonts HERE) the message reads "Happy tenth birthday Tristan, please join us". When the card is folded to fit into the envelope the Hogwarts logo is on the front.

It reads:

Dear Mr. Lauer,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Due to the late notice of your attendance this year we will provide the necessary items you usually would be required to obtain prior to your arrival. Please prepare your wardrobe with a white shirt and either gray or black pants or skirt if you have them on hand.

Term begins May 5th. The sorting ceremony will begin at 1:00 sharp. Classes and Quidditch will finish at 4:30. We await your owl (rsvp) by no later than April 3o. Your ticket for the Hogwarts Express is included in this envelope. The Hogwarts Train will depart from (insert address here) Enjoy your journey.

Yours sincerely,

Deputy Headmistress

Find the secret message in this letter to decode the reason
You are being summoned…

Here is a photo with it all together.

The next step was to order up some balloons from the local party store, Party Land!I found that with the 40 invites we were handing out it was only $3 more expensive to have someone else professionally blow up these balloons instead of getting my own mini tank and taking up my time to to this task. So we ordered them in three colors with orange ribbons (to resemble their feet). Once we got them home I took sharpies and drew the owl faces and bodies on them. My hubby helped by coloring in the eyes and adding color to the beaks.
We decided to have two deliveries. Half the kids receiving invites were close friends to Tristan and we knew where they lived. So we tied the long strings (so the owls can easily be seen from the peep hole or when they open the door) from the owl balloons to the envelops... it was just enough to weight them down but we had to be careful because it was a bit breezy that day and the envelopes were not heavy enough to hold them down very well.

Here is my son "ding dong ditching" the owls to the front doors... They were so much fun to deliver this way. Sitting in the car with the windows down I was able to see and hear a lot of the reactions to our Owl Post deliveries.

The next day the rest of the balloons were ready to be delivered to his class. I tied these ones much shorter to avoid as much tangling as possible of the strings. The balloons held up beautifully (probably because I had them professionally done).  This is a photo of the shorter strings and the three colors we created them in.

We tried to make the owls different too... we had some Crazy Eyed "Weasley" type owls... this one was my son's favorite.
Her is the class photo of all the kids. Remember 1/2 of them got their invitations delivered at home the night before.
My Son is the crazy looking one so excited in the bottom right corner... with his arms spread out wide. Everyone enjoyed the invitations. I hope you do too!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.
